Join the People’s Academy of International Law on Tuesday, October 27, for a seminar on The U.S. Assault on the International Criminal Court. The U.S. has long sought to undermine the ICC, by imposing sanctions on 9 of the 18 ICC judges, ICC prosecutors, a UN Special Rapporteur, and 3 leading Palestinian human rights groups. On October 9, in a dangerous escalation of its effort to cripple the court, the Trump administration sanctioned the entire ICC. The sanctions would prevent the court from using US dollars and US-based financial services and technology companies. Faculty in this seminar will explain the political pressure the U.S. has inflicted on the ICC. They will analyze lawsuits challenging Trump’s executive order (one of which just resulted in the issuance of a temporary restraining order), the firing of ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, and the upcoming December elections of ICC judges and a new prosecutor, which are likely to be influenced or impacted by the sanctions and politicization.

Faculty:

  • Dr. Cuno Tarfusser: Judge of the ICC (2009-2019), ICC Chief Prosecutor (1984 to 2009)
  • Caroline Buisman: Senior Human Rights Office at UN, former counsel before the ICC
  • Myriam Bouazdi: International human rights lawyer, former UN investigator who led complex investigations for international tribunals
  • Joseph Pace: Attorney in Democracy for the Arab World Now and Taxpayer Alliance Against Genocide v. Donald Trump, US Department of Justice, et al.

Moderated by Dean Marjorie Cohn.
