IADL Secretary-General Micòl Savia spoke at the Festa do Avante in Lisbon, Portugal as part of a panel discussion under the title ‘Defender a Paz e a soberanía! Promover a solidariedade e a cooperaçao!’
In her presentation, she discussed the U.S. aggression and blockade against Cuba, the use of “terrorist” designations to suppress resistance, and makes a call for internationalism.

The document presents dozens of leftist organizations, movements, and individuals as members of a supposed Cuban infiltration and subversion network. Among them is the National Lawyers Guild, which is a member of our organization and one of the founding organizations of the International Association.
This report clearly provides the ideological justification to step up the offensive against Cuba, against the solidarity movement, and against all types of political dissent on the left. And in that way, solidarity, which is a legitimate expression of fundamental political freedoms, is presented as a threat, and internationalism is presented as subversion.
Why this aggressive offensive against solidarity? Because they know that solidarity, when collectively organized, becomes a highly effective political force, capable of shifting the balance of power. Because it breaks isolation, because it unites seemingly separate struggles, because it allows us to share resources, experience, and mobilization capacity. Because it can transform national resistance into a common international force.
That is why our response to this criminalization process cannot be fear or retreat. Faced with the use of lists, terrorism accusations, organizational bans, sanctions, our response must instead be to expand solidarity. Faced with every attempt at isolation, we must multiply cooperation. And when an individual or an organization is attacked for their fight for self-determination and sovereignty, our response must be swift, public, collective, and international.
We must not back down; we must step up our response, join forces, and make the causes they try to silence even more visible.
As Fidel taught us: to be an internationalist is to pay our own debt to humanity. As he also taught us, solidarity is not charity; it is a political duty. And when solidarity is organized and turns into collective action, it becomes a force capable of changing history.
Without sovereignty, as you know very well, no people can build socialism. Without internationalist solidarity, every nation stands alone against imperialism. And that is why defending international law, defending peace and sovereignty, promoting solidarity, and advancing the construction of socialism are not separate tasks; they are dimensions of the very same struggle.

El documento presenta decenas de organizaciones, movimientos y personas de izquierda como integrantes de una supuesta red cubana de infiltración y subversión. Entre ellas está la National Lawyer Guild, que es miembro de nuestra organización y una de las organizaciones fundadoras de la Asociación Internacional.
Este informe claramente ofrece la justificación ideológica para incrementar la ofensiva contra Cuba, contra el movimiento de solidaridad y contra todo tipo de disidencia política de izquierda. Y de esa forma, la solidaridad, que es una expresión legítima de libertades políticas fundamentales, se presenta como amenaza y el internacionalismo se presenta como subversión.
¿Por qué esta ofensiva tan agresiva contra la solidaridad? Porque saben que la solidaridad, cuando se organiza colectivamente, se convierte en una fuerza política muy eficaz, capaz de cambiar las correlaciones de fuerzas. Porque rompe el aislamiento, porque une luchas que parecen separadas, porque permite compartir recursos, experiencia y capacidad de movilización, porque puede transformar resistencias nacionales en una fuerza internacional común.
Por eso, nuestra respuesta frente a este proceso de criminalización no puede ser ni miedo ni retroceso. Frente al uso de listas, acusaciones de terrorismo, proscripciones de organización, sanciones, nuestra respuesta tiene que ser, en cambio, la de ampliar la solidaridad. Frente a cada intento de aislamiento, tenemos que multiplicar la cooperación. Y cuando una persona o una organización es atacada por su lucha por la autodeterminación y la soberanía, nuestra respuesta tiene que ser rápida, pública, colectiva e internacional.
No debemos retroceder; debemos elevar la respuesta, sumar fuerza y hacer todavía más visibles las causas que ellos pretenden silenciar.
Como nos enseñó Fidel: ser internacionalista es saldar nuestra propia deuda con la humanidad. Como también él nos enseñó, la solidaridad no es caridad, es un deber político. Y cuando la solidaridad se organiza y se convierte en acción colectiva, se convierte en una fuerza capaz de cambiar la historia.
Sin soberanía, como usted sabe muy bien, ningún pueblo puede construir el socialismo. Sin solidaridad internacionalista, cada pueblo queda solo frente al imperialismo. Y por eso, defender el derecho internacional, defender la paz y la soberanía, promover solidaridad y avanzar en la construcción del socialismo no son tareas separadas; son dimensiones de una misma lucha.
