On March 23, 2021, the members of the Supreme Court of the Philippines en banc released an unprecedented statement addressing calls to action on the worsening incidence of attacks on members of the bar and the bench. One of the courses of action that the Court resolved to undertake is to look into incidents of threats and killings of lawyers in the last ten (10) years. In this regard, the Court urged the public to submit vetted information on such incidents before their scheduled en banc session on April 27, 2021.
In response to this statement, the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) of the Philippines – an IADL member association – will submit its report on attacks involving the exercise of the legal profession, including data gathered by NUPL chapters nationwide, within the required period.
In this regard, we would like to invite you to join us as we share this report to the public in a webinar/online forum entitled In the Line of Fire: Tales from Survivors, to be held via Zoom on April 26, 2021 at 3:00 – 5:00(Manila Time — 7 am UTC) in the afternoon.
We have invited two international organizations which conducted international fact finding missions since 2006 to share their findings. We will also hear testimonies of lawyers who shave been the subject of attacks under attack under the Duterte administration.
