The program will be moderated by Marjorie Cohn, Dean of the People’s Academy of International Law.

This Course will provide valuable information about how individuals and groups can access and use the UN Human Rights Council and its monitoring bodies to defend rights, expose violations and ensure remedies. This Course will explore the role of UN agencies and treaty bodies in monitoring and implementing many of the Human Rights treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR); the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR); the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD); the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT); and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The faculty will address how individuals and groups can make reports and complaints to the UN Human Rights Council and its monitoring bodies to and how to participate in the Universal Review process.

The People’s Academy of International Law, which is sponsored by the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, seeks to help progressive and anti-imperialist lawyers and human rights defenders globally to marshal the tools of international law to support people’s struggles. Register to be taught by recognized experts in international law, from UN Special Rapporteurs to legal academics to people’s lawyers with decades of experience using international law and legal mechanisms to protect human rights. This course has an anti-imperialist, people and earth-centered view of international law, designed to support practitioners and movements. Course materials and education will be in English, French, Spanish and potentially other languages.
