Confederation of Lawyers of Asia and Pacific (COLAP) expresses its serious concern on recent situation in Myanmar and gross violation of Human Rights over there. COLAP strongly condemns genocide committed by Myanmar army on Rohingya Community of Rakhaine province. COLAP says in the statement that inhuman attacks and arson on Rohingyas are still continuing. Millions of people have fallen into a worse humanitarian disaster. The Rohingya problem has seriously affected neighboring countries specially Bangladesh. Thousands of Rohingyas are fleeing and taking shelter in Bangladesh for life saving. This influx of refugee is putting a serious negative impact on the economy and stability of South Asia as well as Asia and Pacific. On the other hand, taking advantage of Rohingya issue some religious extremist groups, local and foreign perpetrators are trying to destabilize that region. Subversive activities of that evil forces posing fear of more serious consequences in Asia. Myanmar’s government and its army are mainly responsible for this grave situation.

COLAP says permanent solution to the Rohingya problem must be resolved by the Myanmar government itself. By accepting the truth that Rohingyas are citizens of Myanmar and in accordance with the recommendation of the Committee led by former UN General Secretary Kofi Anan, initiative should be taken to resolve the crisis. COLAP believes that it is necessary to organize strong UN initiative and global public opinion in this regard. COLAP calls upon UN bodies and other concerned authorities of Asia to take immediate diplomatic initiative and other necessary steps to resolve this crisis. COLAP also calls for protection of life and human rights of Rohingyas and to remain alert about the conspiracy of vested interest groups.
