The General Assembly of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, at its 17th Congress in Hanoi, Vietnam, having received and considered the numerous reports from various member associations concerning acts of extrajudicial executions, death threats, human rights violations and other acts of repression committed against lawyers, labour representatives, leaders of the Afro-Colombian indigenous peoples and human rights advocates in Colombia,
1. Calls upon the government of Colombia to cease all such acts of persecution;
2. Reaffirms the urgent need for a humanitarian agreement to open the way to a negotiated political resolution of the armed conflict which has lasted for so many years in Colombia;
3. Reaffirms the principle of non-intervention and respect for the sovereignty of Colombia as well as the solemn obligation and duty under international law of the government of Colombia to guarantee protection of life and physical integrity of lawyers, labour representatives, human rights advocates and its entire civilian population.
