The International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) sends its deepest condolences to the Cuban people and our compatriots in the National Union of Cuban Jurists on the death of President Fidel Castro.

IADL will never forget the address Fidel gave to IADL members at the closing session of our 13th Congress in Havana in 2000. He described the successful efforts of the Cuban government to implement the campaign to eliminate illiteracy and reiterated the Cuban government’s commitment to realizing economic human rights such as health care as a right for all Cubans. Under his leadership the Cuban people for over fifty years were able to overcome efforts of the United States to destroy the revolutionary spirit of the Cuban people.

IADL recognizes in particular the international solidarity which the Cuban government has given to liberation movements throughout the world, including the decisive role Cuba played in support of the important liberation movements in Southern Africa.

While we mourn the loss of the President Fidel, IADL will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Cuba and their commitment to making a better world.
